How many squares per inch does 1/8 inch graph paper have?
Eight squares per inch in each direction. At the default half-inch margin a Letter sheet holds a 60 by 80 square grid, four times the squares of the same sheet at 1/4 inch.
Is 1/8 inch graph paper too fine to write in?
For handwriting, usually yes. A written digit needs roughly a quarter inch, so eighth-inch squares suit plotting, tracing, and charts where the grid is a measuring reference rather than a writing guide.
Why does 1/8 inch graph paper use lighter lines than coarser grids?
Halving the spacing doubles the ink on the page. The default uses a lighter blue line so the sheet still reads as white with a grid on it instead of a solid tint, and pencil work stays legible on top.
