What a centimeter grid gives you that an inch grid does not

The difference shows up in what a fraction of a square looks like. One square is 10 mm, so half a square is 5 mm and a tenth of a square is 1 mm — both whole numbers, both readable by eye against a ruler. On quarter inch paper half a square is 3.175 mm and a tenth is 0.635 mm; you can point at them, but you cannot say what they are without doing arithmetic first. That is the whole reason metric graph paper exists as a separate thing rather than a translation of the imperial sheet.

A centimeter square is also larger than people expect coming from imperial paper. One centimeter is 0.3937 inch, so it lands between the quarter inch and half inch rulings, and each square covers about two and a half times the area of a quarter inch square — 100 mm² against 40.3 mm². Fewer, bigger squares means the sheet holds less detail but stays writable: a two digit number fits inside one square without crowding the lines.

No imperial ruling substitutes for it. The closest is 3/8 inch, 9.525 mm, which is under half a millimeter short of a centimeter and looks identical on the page. Across the 19 squares this sheet fits, that gap accumulates to just over 9 mm, most of a full square, so a drawing started on 3/8 inch paper will not lie on top of a centimeter grid. If the work is going to be measured, the grid has to be the one the measurements are in.

Why the default sheet is A4 and not Letter

A4 is 210 by 297 mm. Take the default 10 mm margin off each side and the grid area is 190 by 277 mm, so the width is exactly 19 centimeters. The columns land flush on the right margin with nothing spare, which is what you want when the grid is the measuring instrument rather than the background.

The height does not divide as cleanly: 277 mm gives 27 full rows and leaves a 7 mm strip along the top. That strip is the deliberate half of the trade. Adjusting the margin to make the height come out whole would push the vertical margin off 10 mm and cost the flush width, and the width is the edge most people measure from, so it is the one worth keeping exact. The sheet ends up carrying 513 squares.

Letter — 8.5 by 11 inches, or 215.9 by 279.4 mm — cannot do either. With the same 10 mm margins it leaves 195.9 by 259.4 mm of grid: 19 columns with 5.9 mm spare and 25 rows with 9.4 mm spare, so both edges finish mid square and the sheet holds 475 squares instead of 513. It still prints, and it is one click away in the controls if that is the paper in your tray, but A4 is the size the metric grid was drawn for.

What centimeter grids actually get used for

Scale drawing is the use that only works in metric. At 1:100 one centimeter square is one meter of the real thing, so a room can be counted straight off the grid with no arithmetic at all; at 1:50 a square is 50 cm, and at 1:200 it is two meters. That is why a flush 19 cm width matters more than a tidy row count — a plan drawn at 1:100 is 19 meters wide and ends exactly where the margin does.

In a classroom the square is the unit itself. Area and perimeter are taught in square centimeters, so a shape drawn on this grid can be measured by counting squares rather than multiplying, and the answer comes out in the unit the question asked for. Science work uses the same sheet as ordinary plotting paper, one square per unit of whatever is being measured, which is where the "metric graph paper" name usually comes from.

Outside school the grid is used as a chart. Cross stitch, knitting, beadwork, and pixel art all map one square to one stitch or one pixel, and a centimeter square is close to the largest that still fits a usable pattern on a single page — 513 of them at the default spacing. Garden beds, room layouts, and seating plans work the same way, one square to a fixed real distance, and 1:100 is the ratio that makes that distance a whole meter.

Why a printed square often measures 9.4 mm

This is a metric sheet, and the most common thing that happens to it is being printed on US Letter paper. With fit to page or shrink oversized pages left on, the driver scales the A4 sheet down to roughly 94 percent to make it fit, and every 1 cm square arrives at about 9.4 mm. Nothing on the page looks wrong; it only surfaces when somebody puts a ruler on it. The reverse trip, a Letter sheet forced onto A4, lands near 97 percent and fails the same way.

Two settings prevent it. Set the print scale to 100 percent — Acrobat labels this "Actual size" — instead of leaving it on a fit option, and set the paper size to A4 if the printer offers it. If the tray only holds Letter, still print at 100 percent: A4 is 17.6 mm longer than Letter, so a strip is cropped off the length and you lose a row or so, but every square that does print is a true centimeter, which is the part that matters.

Check with ten squares rather than one. Lay a ruler along a row and measure ten squares end to end; they should read 100 mm. A single square is a poor test because the error is only 0.6 mm at 94 percent, which is hard to separate from where you put the ruler. Over ten squares the same error is 5.9 mm and impossible to miss.
